1912 Bullock Reunion
I received a photo copy of this picture from Mary Ellen Bullock (Murphy) Cromer
sometime in May, 1990, but the copy she had sent to me was faded. During
the 2002 reunion the picture was brought up in the conversation. When got home
I called Mary Ellen and ask about the picture. Mary Ellen had her son
Richard "Dick" Murphy scan the picture and E-mail it to me.
Mary Ellen wrote in her original letter:
"I am enclosing a scanned copy of a reunion held at Emery and Ruth
McGalliard's home on Centennial Road, east of Muncie. My sister looks to be
about a year old and she was born in 1911, so I mark the picture about 1912.
The only original Bullock sibling missing is the brother Charles and family."
Hold the cursor over a person's head and it will display their name.

FOREWORD
I have always retained a keen relationship to the Bullock
Family since my first association with them when I attended a reunion in 1919
at the home of Ruth and Fred Swander. I was given a very cordial welcome and
was received with much love and friendliness. I shall never forget Aunt Ruth
McGalliard as she came down the walk to meet me. She clasped my hand, gave me
a kiss on the cheek and an encouraging pat on the shoulder, endearments that
were so typical of her life. From that day on I have felt that I was one of
the family.
In retrospect of the John Wesley Bullock Family I have
tried to compile some of the events of interest in their life's history, as
they have been related to me and as I have known them.
It has been a pleasure for me to have been in many of
your homes and conversed with you about your immediate families and the
cherished memories of your ancestors. Likewise the correspondence with others
has been very interesting and informative. I am deeply indebted to all
who have in any way contributed to this genealogy. The response from all of
you was wonderful and has made it possible for me to make so complete a
history of the family. I not only gained statistical facts, but your
fellowship, kindness and hospitality has made my life richer far more that I
can express.
And now as this nears its completion, I am some what
bewildered at its vastness. What started out to be a "wee bit of a
story" has grown by leaps and bounds due to your generous response and
encouragement. What I thought I could do in a few short weeks has required
much of my time in research and concentrated thought for over two years. This
volume has had its possibilities through you and I hope in the future, each of
you will add to it as time render changes in all our families. I am proud
that our children share in the worthy heritage of their fore fathers and I
hope will always emulate their virtues.

EXCERPTS
In 1937 Arch E. Hamilton took his mother, Laura, an aunt,
Althea Bullock and uncle, Oliver Bullock to Federalsburg, Maryland.
This was near the former home of John Wesley and Amanda Bullock
and this was also the trading center where they had bought their
groceries and other supplies. Laura hoped to make some contacts
there and learn more about the Bullock and Leverton families
and their ancestral background.
In Towson, Maryland, they visited the daughters of Dr. and
Mary (Nichols) Jones, the latter was a daughter of Silas Nichols, who
was the foster father of John Wesley Bullock. Mrs. Jones was
deceased and Dr. Jones was quite old so conversationly they
learned little of the Bullock family. However there were diaries
of Silas Nichols and his daughter mary (Nichols) Jones that had
been preserved and Laura copied the Following excerpts from these
diaries:
FROM MARY (NICHOLS) JONES'S DIARY:
John Bullock was a brother to Richard and probably to
Thomas Broome Bullock. John may not have married.
Some of Richard Bullock's children were Henry, James,
Mary, Sally, Emma (a twin) and another John Wesley Bullock and others.
FROM SILAS NICHOLS' DIARY:
John Wesley Bullock was the son of Broome Bullock.
William Bullock, a brother to John Wesley Bullock, went
away west or somewhere. He was not heard from again.
January 14, 1858:
Arthur Leverton left his home for the west. he settled in
Milton Indiana.
December 8, 1863:
John Wesley Bullock left Maryland for Indiana with his
wife Amanda leverton and five children, Charlie E. Bullock, Ruth H. Bullock,
Nebraska T. Bullock, Arthur L. Bullock, and Thomas Walter Bullock,
with about $100 worth of baggage and he was 34 years old.
In 1962 Don and Margaret (Hamilton) Riggin and Lois
(Hamilton) Davis went to Salisbury, Snow Hill, Princess Anne and
Federalsburg, Maryland and reviewed records there in search of
more information but to no avail.
What records we have may seem very meager, but we must
remember that the people of Maryland still carry the scar of the Civil War
and in some instances are a bit reluctant in issuing any facts
when the names Bullock and Leverton were mentioned. Let us
consider that we may be fortunate with this bit of history and
hope that it may lead the way to more facts in our future
efforts.
