Lena Wesley Bullock
Lena Wesley Bullock, seventh child of John Wesley
and Amanda Elizabeth Bullock was born in Fayette County, Indiana
October 4, 1866. When she was a little girl the family moved to the Claypool farm,
east of Muncie, Indiana. Sometime later they moved to a farm on the north banks
of White River, south of Mount Tabor Cemetery. It was while living there she and
her two sisters, Althea and Laura, earned their first money picking
berries for Fullheart's Nursery. The family moved again to the Huffman farm south
of Muncie and north of the Bethel Church. Lena, with the rest of the family
attended the Bethel Church during their residency in that community.
Lena never married but remained at home with her
parents as long as they lived. Her mother died May 7, 1898 and soon after her
death Oliver, Lena, and Althea moved with their father to the
Hanna farm east of Selma.
After Oliver's marriage they bought a cozy little four
room house in Whitely on East 6th Street, now Highland Avenue.
Lena held a birthright in the Quaker Church, but joined
the Whitely Methodist Church when they moved to Muncie and was a member there until
her death. She was a homemaker, a perfect housekeeper and an excellent cook. The
little black cook stove in the kitchen shown like a mirror and her china and
glassware really sparkled. Her home was spotless and an inspiration to the
grandchildren. Her manner with them was patience personified. She met her kin at
the door with a smile, a hug, and a kiss, and if there ever was a place in this
world that the nieces and nephews felt wanted, it was with "Aunt Lena
."
Lena stayed with her father while Althea sewed
in homes of her customers. However, she was also a good seamstress and sewed at
home for other people. After her father's death in 1908, Lena and
Althea lived in the little home together. In a few months they both had the
measles and Lena became quite ill and was taken to the home of a niece,
Carrie Manring. Carrie gave her the best care, with much love and
tenderness, yet she was unable to withstand the complications that developed and
passed away December 21, 1909. She was buried in Mount Tabor Cemetery.
