Emily E. Flinn Community has anniversary By Staff Writer Rebecca S. Green
UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE -- Lillian Hole, 90, left, talks with Chaplain Pamela Mason on Sunday at a celebration of the 95th anniversary of the Emily E. Flinn Community. Hole worked as an assistant administrator there for 13 years and is now a resident.
When Lillian Hole, 90, thinks of her time as the assistant
administrator of the Emily E. Flinn Community, she remembers the warm bond
between the residents and he staff members at the community. The memory of that bond between the residents and the staff at the 95-year-old community was brought to mind as Hole, now a resident of the facility, was honored at the community's anniversary celebration Sunday. "It means a lot to me," Hole said of the community, which she now calls home. "There is nothing else in (Marion) that means as much to me." Hole recounted the times when she would walk the halls of the facility in the late evening hours, as a staff member, to make sure the residents didn't need any thing for the night. She remembers hearing one resident say her name as she walked by. When Hole went back to see if she was needed, she realized the resident was praying for her. Hole, a former pastor's wife, joined other residents and members of the Grant County community Sunday in honoring the facility's historic presence in the area/ Hole was honored for her unique position as a former staff |
member and now as a resident of the community. The anniversary celebration, which is becoming a tradition, is held about every five years, said Nancy Raidy, director of development. "It is an opportunity to celebrate this ministry," Raidy said, "God has been good to us, to be able too serve in a facility like this." The celebration featured the sounds of the Marion based Kings Four gospel group, which had residents and guests clapping and singing to old gospel favorites, such as Just a Closer Walk With Thee and When the Saints Go Marching In. Earlier in the day, guests had the opportunity to join in a time of games and an outdoor barbecue, but they moved inside for the program because of the chilly autumn weather. The residential community, located at 614 W. 14tg St., is operated by the National Benevolent Association of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and is home to 118 senior citizens, said Ken Adkins, executive director. The facility, opened in 1905, exists to provide the residents with a home-like community, Adkins said. |
